"...my defeat means nothing, it has already begun..."
(Shadow Mesmeroth)
Quote-deco

Shadow Mesmeroth is a being that contains the spiritual essence of the warlock Mesmeroth (who bound himself to an Anima Orb), and the ancient divine being known as the Shadow, who granted Mesmeroth the TRILOTH spell to destroy Arcadia. Over the millennium after the Catastrophe, Shadow Mesmeroth lurks inside the machines of the Grand Core, controlling the Streams of Creation of the world by taking the Sacred Emblems under his control with a set of curses. He aims to resurrect himself as Arcadia's supreme God, and tries to thwart the Kid's plans of freeing the Sacred Emblems from their curses, which would lead to the restoration of the world.

Description[]

Shadow Mesmeroth is the physical manifestation of the warlock Mesmeroth's spiritual essence as well that of the Shadow. Before being awakened, he inhabits the machines of Arcadia by means of an "interface", rendering them unreadable and thus inoperable to the scholars of Sky Island.[2][3] This had the effect of keeping Arcadia in a permanently primitive or "dark" state.

Appearance[]

Shadow Mesmeroth appears as a ghostly figure, floating above the ground without visible feet. He retains many of his former self's physical attributes, such as the hooded robe and the horned mask. He has a red, glowing skeleton-like pattern extending over parts of his body. He stands much taller than an average man, approximately 10 to 12 feet in hight.

Game Differences[]

Monster of Uncharted Seas was developed before Knights of the Lost Realm, so there are some significant design differences visible, particularly for the mask. In OH1, the mask is a low-poly human skull without its jaw or decorations. The horns are not visibly connected to the mask and extend sideways rather than forward. They are of the same grey color.

Synopsis[]

Pre-Catastrophe[]

Mesmeroth The Shadow
Quote-end Main page: Mesmeroth

Originally from Faroah,[4] Mesmeroth always loved technology and started building robots at an early age.[5] At age 14 he comes to the White City to study magic and become a warlock.[6] He fights in the Direfolk War but after his victory over Shadowmaga and acquisition of the Guardian of the Realm’s mask, he is cast aside by Archimedes[7] and leaves the White City to focus on his studies of the world. He creates the Dark Army to move war against Arcadia and force Archimedes to step down from his plans to bring his kingdom to the stars.[8]

Quote-end Main page: The Shadow

The Shadow is a being with power equal to that of the three Gods Sol, Neyto and Trito.[9] It arrived on Gaia with the Beacons. Upon landing one of the Beacons crashed and it's seeding technology was damaged, producing the Ogres and Goblins.[10] The Philosophers of Source believe that the Shadow is the life force behind the Direfolk.[11] The Shadow intended to join the Streams of Creation but something went wrong and it was unable to.[12] According to Trinity, it is considered to poison people's faith and to divide them.[13] The Shadow is the corrupted power behind Mesmeroth, providing him with the TRILOTH spell to dominate the world.

Post-Catastrophe[]

When Mesmeroth faces Archimedes inside the Grand Core to stop him from activating the Grand Core, he destroys the Shadow, thinking it has "overstayed its welcome" before offering Archimedes a last chance to step down. When Archimedes refuses and activates the giant machine anyway, Mesmeroth morphs into an Anima Orb, counting to be resurrected at the Riskbourne Citadel by his Dark Apostle. However, the Shadow (who actually wasn't destroyed after all) merges and/or overtakes the warlock's soul and they bond to the Grand Core's machines, which has ascended to the sky as a result of Archimedes' hidden spaceship. With the Stream of Creation, Shadow Mesmeroth sets curses on the Sacred Emblems using his servant. The Emblem of Earth is cursed with a demon plant known as Turmos, and the Emblem of Ocean, with the entire Gillfolk Palace and its Princess, turned to ice and its deceased king infused with dark energy. The Emblem of Sun, however, somehow turns into a necklace worn by young maidens to represent Sol, Goddess of Light. All this time, Shadow Mesmeroth is seeking to use the power of the Emblems to resurrect himself as Arcadia’s “god”. Shortly before the onset of Monster of Uncharted Seas, Shadow Mesmeroth manipulates a scholar studying the Grand Core to hand over the Emblem of Sun to kickstart the resurrection in exchange for empty promises of Sky Island coming back to the ground. This causes the Emblem of Sun’s young bearer, Mary, to dive down into the Uncharted Seas to protect the necklace, which results in the prophesied child’s birth occuring.[14]

Restoration of Arcadia[]

When the Kid enters the room of the Grand Core where Mesmeroth faced Archimedes so many years ago, the Possessed Guy is in the process of offering the (previously stolen) necklace to his master. The statue of a maiden in the centre explodes and kills the Possessed Guy. Shadow Mesmeroth senses the power of all three Emblems and materializes in front of the Kid. In a climactic battle Shadow Mesmeroth aims to defeat the Kid and take the Emblems in order to resurrect himself. When he is defeated however, he informs the Kid that his resurrection is not hindered. Because he is part of the Streams of Creation, Shadow Mesmeroth can move between different machines that were made during the time of the Arcadians, sharing the same advanced technological and magical features. Since the Living Fortress, Oceanhorn is the only one still functioning, he moves into it and controls both the sea monster and the Dark Apostle during the final battle against the Kid. The Kid uses Trin’s Flute to control the monster, however, and commands it to destroy the Dark Apostle. So it does, and in a large explosion, Oceanhorn, the Dark Apostle, and Shadow Mesmeroth are all destroyed for good.

Abilities[]

Shadow Mesmeroth likely retained the full powers of both Mesmeroth and the Shadow. However, only the following have been demonstrated.

  • Fireballs: Shadow Mesmeroth is capable of summoning magic fireballs in combat.
  • Possession: Shadow Mesmeroth's primary ability is to transfer it's consciousness into machines, and even possess living beings.

Battle[]

Defeating Shadow Mesmeroth

Hero fights Shadow Mesmeroth

The Kid fighting against Shadow Mesmeroth.

Attack
Shadow Mesmeroth will engage by throwing fire balls at the Hero. When his health decreases enough, he will start to throw two fireballs simultaneously! The Kid can use the Shield of Chronos to block Shadow Mesmeroth's fire balls.

Defense
Shadow Mesmeroth has no active defense, however, due to his incorporeal state most attacks are useless. He is irritated by fire attacks, though, so there are several methods to annoy him into revealing his weak-spot.

  • The Kid can cast a fire spell on him.
  • The Kid can use his shield to reflect Shadow Mesmeroth's own fire balls back at him.
  • If the braziers in the middle are ignited, the Kid can shoot an arrow through the flames and at Shadow Mesmeroth.

Once he is irritated enough, three red-golden glowing orbs appear. Only one is Shadow Mesmeroth's true weak-spot, the other two are decoys. The orbs are best attacked with the many quick sword slashes. From this, he will sustain considerable damage.

After sustaining a fair amount of damage, Shadow Mesmeroth will leave the platform and activate the laser turrets' turbines, one on each corner of the arena. The Kid must strike all four of them to deactivate the turrets, after which Shadow Mesmeroth will return to the platform and continue his fireball attacks.

This process has to be repeated around three times until Shadow Mesmeroth is defeated.
